"Once a Democrat is in the White House next year, they’ll suddenly remember how important accountability and transparency are at the federal level."

Don't hold your breath waiting for your first prediction to come true. And if "they" refers to Democrats, your second prediction will only be accurate when McCain wins the White House.

And George Bush is not accountable to voters either, being unable to run for a third term. So "voter accountability" doesn't really matter with regard to my point, which is that some of the folks (rightly) crying for accountability at a local level seemed unconcerned with it at a national level when it's their party that's in power.

I'm not too worried about it though. Once a Democrat is in the White House next year, they'll suddenly remember how important accountability and transparency are at the federal level.

"However, I can’t help wishing that some of these same folks who are (rightly) demanding transparency and accountability from our local government would hold our federal government to the same standard."

Non sequitur.

Mitch Johnson is not accountable to voters. He's never been held accountable by city council.

This week's dog and pony show didn't change a thing.

On the other hand, the reality is that our city council is not accountable to voters either.

That's never been clearer than the recent nonsense.

"wray camp: move on and try to impact government opacity in positive ways."

We are.

Step One, get rid of Mitch Johnson, and the festering rot within the city staff.

Step Two, get rid of power-broker/special interest politics that dominate this town.

Step Three, fire the majority of the current city council, including the mayor.

Step Four, hold accountable all the people who have made this sordid mess possible.......including the apologists and the enablers of bad government.

not to get involved in this wray bs once again, but when was he ever charged with a crime? burden of proof? the man was fired. period.

let's say for the sake of argument he was fired for no cause (or "at will," which happens to be legally acceptable in many states in non-union gigs), if all the "unjustly" fired people in greensboro had a weekly column dedicated to their "unjust" firings, we'd be living in soapopera-boro.

wray camp: move on and try to impact government opacity in positive ways.

city government: modernize to an information retrieval system that cuts out the meat space requests and allows people to download *all public accessible documents* online. and no, not without validating their identity.

Hi Brenda - I'm sure you have, and I thank you for that. My post certainly doesn't apply to all of the people trying to hold the city accountable. Many, such as yourself, are consistent about applying the same principles to all levels of government. My post is aimed only at a certain subset of people who seem to regularly brush off any scrutiny of Bush's administration.

Some of us have spent the greater part of a our adult hood writing letters to our Congressmen in just such an effort. In fact, I started writing letters to Congressmen when stamps cost 13 cents! Thank Goodness for e-mail since arthritis has made it difficult for me to write with a pen. Picking out letters on a keyboard I can still do quite well. Also my Social Security (or what I normally call my Welfare for the Elderly) can't be stretched to cover 40 cent stamps. BB
