The ACLU is at it again
By Anthony | December 12th, 2006 | 5:30 pmA New Jersey elementary school tried to prohibit a second-grade student from performing “Awesome God” at her school talent show due to the song’s religious nature. Thankfully, a judge correctly in favor of the student.
“The First Amendment’s Establishment Clause prohibits governmental advancement or restriction of religion,” the court said. However, the circumstances of a talent show, after school, where performances were “selected, developed, practiced and performed by the individual students and without substantial interference by the school” simply could not be assumed to carry a formal message of religious endorsement from the school.
And the ACLU, with their anti-Christian crusade to eliminate all public religious expression? They filed a brief on the student’s behalf, arguing that she should have been allowed to sing the song.

“And the ACLU, with their anti-Christian crusade…”
Which is why, once again, we are card-carrying members. (See The American President, great soliloquy, near the end of the gosh-darned liberal movie.)

How is it an anti-Christian crusade if they’re trying to “eliminate all public religious expression”? Wouldn’t that make it an anti-Christian/Jewish/Muslim/Hindu/Etc. crusade?

I must be in a foul mood…that previous comment was pretty damn nit-picky. Anyway, I’m glad to see the ACLU being as consistent as ever.

Hi Jon,
“that previous comment was pretty damn nit-picky”
No problem – I was just poking fun at the complaints of the anti-ACLU crowd, so the phrase wasn’t intended to make total sense. As far as consistency goes, the ACLU is generally pretty consistent. Religious expression by individual citizens: Good. Endorsement of specific religions by government agencies (or employees in an official capacity): Bad.
Sometimes they do go overboard. But they definitely are not trying to quash religious expression in general.
