Cartoon: Nov. 3 1979

The Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Commission recently released its report on the events of November 3, 1979. Many people have weighed in on how helpful they think the report will be in addressing the problems resulting from the shootings that day, and their aftermath. Some opponents of the process deny there is even any problem to address.

I’ve started making my way through the report, and am hopeful that some good will come of it.

Update: Some of the dynamics shown in this cartoon seem to be on display in the comments to one of today’s Letters to the Editor.

This cartoon is soooo profound and insightful Anthony. The three commentaries in Sunday’s paper seem to represent the various view points. I did make note of one very important thing however that both Elizabeth Wheaton and Ed Cone were clear on and that was the many inaccuracies. This marginalizes the entire report in my opinion because how is one to know what is true and what is fantasy? I guess I am still of the opinion that it is past (and not past enough) and should have been left there for later historians to give it it’s proper place in history.

Thank you for the kind words, Brenda. I agree that any “inaccuracies” are going to lessen the effectiveness of the report, and that’s unfortunate. I feel that there must be some way to extract some good from it though – it’s just a matter of separating the wheat from the chaff. Regarding the idea of leaving Nov 3 in the past – in my cartoon, the ball is still chained to the guy’s leg, whether he personally notices it or not, and that will make it very hard to move forward, whether he admits it or not.
